Northern Institute for Economic Development
The rural research and extension initiative, which is contained in the Governor's University of Wisconsin budget recommendation, addresses the need for university resources to be dedicated to the two most important issues facing rural Wisconsin - jobs and incomes.
One component of this initiative that pertains to rural economic revitalization is support for the Center for Economic Development at the University of Wisconsin-Superior. This center is part of the recently created Northern Institute for Economic Development, which combines the resources of the Small Business Development Center with the campus-bases community development specialists of the Center for Economic Development.
The focus of the institute, in order to meet the particular need of northwest Wisconsin, will be on the tourism and recreation industry, forest product industries, and local community and business development options.
